The Port of Tórshavn is once again a participant at ONS this year, as was the case the foregoing years. They will represent both Tórshavn as a town and as the Port of Tórshavn, which is the direct gateway to more than forty percent of the people in the Faroes.
Oil industry activities
The objective for the participation of the Port of Tórshavn and their former participation at ONS is largely to support the companies participating on behalf of the Faroes. Another objective is also to market Tórshavn as a town and a supply base, without taking anything away from Rúnavík, which is the permanent offshore supply base port.
The Tórshavn Harbour office is located on the eastern harbour arm in Tórshavn and has thirteen full-time employees, who apart from the whole harbour area in Tórshavn, also are responsible for large harbour areas in the villages of Kollafjord and Sund.
Central gateway to the Faroes
Apart from Tórshavn being the geographical centre of the Faroes, with over forty percent of the population residing there, Tórshavn is also a key junction area for the Faroes, regarding industry and the transport of freight and people. Annually 3.400 vessels dock and depart the Port of Tórshavn and 680.000 tons of cargo, pass over its quayside.
In general, it may be said that activity on the municipal Port of Tórshavn quayside is the transport of cargo and people, both internally and externally, the loading and unloading of cargo and equipment, various repairs of all kinds, provisions and bunkering. In brief, all that is affiliated with a sea-based industry.
Almost all imports and exports to and from the Faroes come via Tórshavn and therefore there is heavy traffic in the Port of Tórshavn. Apart from the Port of Tórshavn being a key junction area regarding imports, there is a large back-up area behind the actual harbour. A multitude of companies are located round the harbour, which are capable of supplying a multitude of services to vessels, which dock here. Augmenting all this is the town of Tórshavn itself, capable of all thinkable services. In this respect, both practical- and social conditions have been thought of.
A good solution
Apart from the Port of Tórshavn representing itself, it is possibly also representing in particular the companies located round the harbour, directly associated with the Port of Tórshavn. Of the companies associated directly with the Port of Tórshavn, the following may be mentioned: Eimskip, Faroe Agency, FaroeShip, Smyril Line, and Tor Shipping. These are all shipping companies and agencies.
These companies all have considerable container storage- and quayside areas, where it is possible to unload and reload equipment, containers and other material associated with an oil industry.
Adding to this, a large 40.000m2 area is currently under development in the village of Kollafjord, and it will be available for industrial purposes shortly.
With round the clock security, all required facilities, and bunkering options for fuel, water, provisions, etc., the Port of Tórshavn is an excellent solution, when oil exploration activity begins and the equipment, people, provisions and all other aspects have to be
